Da die Heimfahrt von New Orleans nach Ypsi über 16 Stunden in Anspruch nimmt, haben wir nach 6 Stunden einen Zwischenstopp in Memphis, TN gemacht. Wenn man einmal in Memphis ist, dann muss man nach Graceland. Was wir natürlich gemacht haben. Graceland ist/war die Villa von Elvis “The King” Presley. Diese kann man zusammen mit seinen komischen Anzügen (Jumpsuites), goldenen Schallplatten, Autos, Flugzeugen uns seinem Grab besichtigen. Ehrlichgesagt hätte ich mir alles etwas größer und interessanter vorgestellt…

Nach unserer Hausbesichtigung haben wir uns dann auf den Heimweg nach Michigan gemacht. Letztendlich sind wir in wenigen Tagen über 7200 km (einmal nach Athen, zurück und wieder hin) gefahren und haben 9 Bundesstaaten durchquert.

Nächster Stop auf unserer Tour: “The Big Easy”

Nach einer kurzen 12-stündigen Fahrt von Cape Coral nach New Orleans, durch Florida, Alabama, Mississippi und schlussendlich Lousiana, haben wir eigentlich eine ziemlich zerstörte Stadt erwartet (nachdem Hurricane Katrina 2005 doch einigen Schaden angerichtet hat). Aber erstaunlicherweise war eigentlich absolut nichts davon zu sehen. Die Stadt liegt größtenteils 2m unter dem Meeresspiegel, was einem eigentlich nur auffällt, wenn man auf dem Damm am Mississippi River steht. New Orleans ist eine der ältesten Städten der USA und wurde vonfranzösischen Einwanderern gegründet. Straßenschilder und viele Namen sind immernoch auf französisch. Die Altstadt bzw. Stadtzentrum heißt wohl auch deshalb auch “French Quarter”. Hier gibt es eigentlich nur Bars, Souvenierläden, Bars, Restaurant, Bars und äähhhhh vereinzelt haben wir auch Bars gesehen Zum Glück ist New Orleans eine der wenigen Städten (neben Las Vegas) in denen Alkohl auf den Straßen erlaubt (bzw. ausdrücklich erwünscht ist). Die Party findet deshalb nicht drinnen statt, sondern auf den engen Straßen, vor allem auf der Bourbon Street. An Silvester haben wir uns hier das Feuerwerk über dem Mississippi River angeschaut und dann versucht auf im French Quarter in irgendeine Bar zu kommen. Nachdem das aber leider nicht gelang sind wir um 3 Uhr zurück ins Hotel um am nächsten Tag wieder die Heimreise anzutreten.

Fazit: New Orleans muss man auf jeden Fall einmal gesehen haben. Mardi Gras ich komme…

Die letzten Tage im warmen Florida haben wir am Strand von Fort Myers und in den Everglades verbracht. Fort Myers Beach ist eine Insel im Meer, bei der man Sonntag Mittags schon etwas Stau in Kauf nehmen muss um über Brücken dorthin zu kommen. Der Strand war eigentlich sehr schön, nur war dort die Hölle los.

Am nächsten Tag waren wir noch in den Everglades, um eine Airboatfahrt zu machen und eine Alligator Farm zu besichtigen. So ein Airboat ist ziemlich laut, und es hat echt Spass gemacht mal drin zu sitzen. Leider hatten wir wohl einen schlechten Tag erwischt, denn es gab nur 2 Alligatoren zu sehen. Danach haben wir die Tiere aber noch in der Farm anschauen können, bzw sogar selbst einen 6-monate alten Alligator gehalten.

Dummerweise ging auf dieser Tour eine kleine unscheinbare Warnleuchte in unserem Pontiac an… Zur Sicherheit haben wir dann noch bei einer Werkstatt in Miami vorbeigeschaut. Diagnose: Abgassensor und Keilriemen müssen getauscht werden. Den Keilriemen haben wir dann tauschen lassen, um nicht einen ungewollten Stop auf der “Alligator Alley” (der 200km Straße durch die Everglades, auf der es ausser Alligatoren nicht viel gibt) einlegen zu müssen.

Nächster Punkt, der in Florida Abgehakt werden muss: Miami Beach.

Miami Beach ist eine eigene Stadt auf einer Insel vor Miami. Erster erfreulicher Eindruck: Mit den Straßen und Brücken siehts hier genau so aus wie in alten Bud Spencer Filmen. Miami Beach hat einen wunderschönen kilometerlangen Strand, viele kleine Parks und viele kleine Restaurants.

Nachdem wir dann Atlanta hinter uns gelassen haben, wurden die Temperaturen auch immer wärmer und wärmer. Schließlich ging es ja auch nach Süden. Ziel: Cape Coral am Golf von Mexico. Hier hatten wir für ein paar Tage eine Villa gemietet. Die ersten Tage haben wir dann am Pool und Strand verbracht. Und ich muss sagen, Weihnachten bei 30 Grad am Strand, hat echt was

Der nächste Ausflug stand aber schon wieder an, denn wenn man schon einmal in Florida ist, dann ist Disney World in Orlanda ein Muss. Es war recht wenig los, und wir mussten eigentlich nirgends länger als 20-30 Minuten anstehen. Der Park ist in viele “kleine” Parks unterteilt, wir waren im Magic Kingdom, dem wohl bekanntesten von allen. Leider ist hier das meiste auf Kinder ausgelegt, die Achterbahnen sind ziemlich unspektakulär und das meiste sind irgendwelche langsamen Bahnfahrten durch Märchen wie Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh oder Schneewittchen. Natürlich gab es auch eine Weihnachtsparade mit Nussknackern, Elfen, Lebkuchenmännern und Santa Clause. Wir waren in Mickeys und Minnies Haus, haben Robinson Crusoes Baumhaus besichtigt, haben Bilder vom Cinderella Schloss gemacht, und am Ende habe ich auch eine tolle Mütze bekommen :-)

Während unseres Breaks haben wir einen “kleinen” Roadtrip unternommen. Und da es wohl etwas zu viel ist alles von den über 4500 Meilen (über 7200km) jetzt in einen Beitrag zu fassen, fange ich einfach mal mit der ersten Etappe nach Atlanta an.

Wir sind am 22.12. ziemlich früh morgens gestartet um es Abends noch zu Coca Cola zu schaffen. Nachdem tatsächlich alles irgendwie in unser Auto gepasst hat, verlief die Fahrt auch recht problemlos. Bis wir leider mitten im Nichts in Kentucky einen platten Reifen hatten. Also, auf dem Interstate bei -15 Grad mal das komplette Auto wieder ausgeräumt, denn der Ersatzreifen liegt ja bekanntlich ganz unten Christophs und meine Finger sind schon fast am Wagenheber angefroren… Glücklicherweise fanden wir aber gleich irgendeinen Hillbilly Reifenhändler. Feststellung: In Kentucky haben wohl irgendwie alle Männer einen langen Bart, aber es lief nicht ständig Bluegrass im Radio. Dummerweise haben wir es dann nach diesem Zwischenstop nicht mehr ins Museum geschafft. Aber am nächsten morgen ging es dann pünktlich um 9 in das “World of Coca Cola” Museum. Hier in Atlanta wurde Coca Cola erfunden und seitdem ist hier auch das Headquarters beheimatet. Im Museum kann man dann viele Werbeplakate, Cola Automaten, Flaschen, … anschauen. Es wird einem die Geschichte des Getränks näher gebracht und ganz wichtig: Am Schluss kann man über 60 Sorten Coca Cola Produkte “verkosten”. All You Can Drink sozusagen. Merken für das nächste mal: Nicht zu viel trinken, bei dem süßen Zeug wirds einem schnell kotzübel. Atlanta an sich, fand ich jetzt eine sehr schöne Stadt: Sehr flach, wenig Hochhäuser und nette Wohngegenden.

Am Donnerstag sind Colin, Katlin, Christoph, Stephi und ich nach Toledo, OH in den Zoo gefahren, um die “Lights before Christmas” anzuschauen. Das ganze eigentlich nur um mal wieder festzustellen dass Amis nen Schuss haben… (siehe Video).

Ausserdem ist am Freitag ein kleiner Schneesturm über Michigan gefegt, der uns innerhalb ein paar Stunden über 30cm Neuschnee bescheert hat. Wir haben dann unseren Tag damit verbracht, unseren Nachbarn zuzuschauen vom Parkplatz zu kommen… bei den meisten waren die Versuche vergebens
